Job Description:
Overview:MercyOne Central Iowa operates four not-for-profit,
Catholic medical centers in Des Moines, West Des Moines, Newton and
Centerville and two specialty hospitals - MercyOne Children's
Hospital in Des Moines and MercyOne Rehabilitation Hospital in
Clive (965 beds total) - along with more than 20 additional
facilities that house more than 50 primary care, pediatric,
internal medicine and specialty clinics. Founded by the Sisters of

ResponsibilitiesGENERAL SUMMARY: Nursing leadership position, which
serves primarily as an assistant to the Market Director, managing
day-to-day department operations and performing assigned management
responsibilities, including personnel and financial/fiscal
management and education. Coordinates nursing activities to
facilitate safe, quality patient care at the department level.
Serves as a resource and role model and collaborates with a
multidisciplinary team to optimize department operations. Maintains
competence level needed to deliver direct patient care to defined
patient population. Management responsibilities comprise > 50%
of the job role. Works independently with limited direct
supervision in accordance with the Iowa Nurse Practice Act, Mercy
Medical Center policies, and patient care standards and
professional judgment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Responsible for
day-to-day operation of department nursing personnel including:
staffing, scheduling, budget, equipment needs, patient needs, as
well as physician and staff needs/requests.Provides leadership as a
role model in developing and implementing the team concept of
patient care delivery.Demonstrates leadership skills in quality
improvement activities including performance improvement processes
to facilitate clinical practice changes. Responsible for
performance reviews with assistance of department director on an
on-going basis as well as annually.Maintains clinical competencies
to serve as mentor to staff and as a clinical resource to patient
care personnel.Provides planning for and maintains appropriate
educational opportunities. Ensures staff is competent in patient
care skills for the Medical Imaging Department. Follows-up with
imaging patients at home or across the continuum as needed.Develops
and revises patient care standards, pathways, policies,
documentation forms and standard orders for select patient
populations (imaging population) in conjunction with other care
providers. Coordinates and conducts patient care in the outpatient
and inpatient setting. Follows up with customer needs, issues or
complaints; and utilizes appropriate resources for resolution
thereby increasing patient satisfaction. Provides patient/family or
caregiver education and counseling in recognition and solution of
physical, emotional and environmental health. Writes competencies
and ensures staff competence in accordance to Mercy Medical
Center's regulatory body expectations. Documentation of staff
competence completed on a continual basis as well as annually.
#MissionCriticalQualificationsMINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND
ABILITIES REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree in nursing required. If
actively pursuing degree, BSN or related field required depending
on progress into the degree. Those who have completed degree in a
related field will be grandfathered in. Expected to take at least
six credits per year at Department Director's discretion for
exception. Alternative educational preparation may be considered by
the Department Director to meet the individual needs of the
department. Three years of R.N. experience. Possession of a current
or compact state license as a registered nurse issued/defined by
the State of Iowa. Basic Life Support (BLS) certified within six
(6) weeks of hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and
certifications include American Red Cross CPR/AED for the
Professional Rescuer and American Heart Association Basic Life
Support.Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training
specific to population served within three (3) months of
hire.Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certified or
obtained within three (3) months of hire. The acceptable
credentialing body for this requirement is the American Heart
Association.Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
within 3 months of hire.Specialty certification within 12 months of
degree or employment. CommonSpirit Health participates in
E-verify.
