The Vice President of Field Underwriting is responsible for GuideOne's overall field underwriting strategy including the Church, Emerging & Small Business niches. This position will lead a team to execute the company's day-to-day underwriting activities while working with GuideOne's agency partners and sales team to ensure we're achieving growth and profitability goals. With a mission to grow and develop the front lines of GuideOne's underwriting department, the ideal VP of Field Underwriting will have 10 or more years of P&C Commercial Lines Underwriting experience, proven ability to set and lead field underwriting strategy, and have an exceptional reputation as a people leader. As VP of Field Underwriting, you will: Drive Field Underwriting Strategy: Partners and coordinates business strategy between commercial underwriting, sales and home office departments to ensure appropriate pricing strategies and marketing programs are pursued in support of the profitability goals of all product lines. Monitors risk acceptability, pricing adequacy and classification accuracy of accounts to ensure profitability and controlled growth of business. Drive Profitable Growth Strategy and Execution: Spearheads growth and expansion of the company's product lines. Maintains key agent/customer relationships and develops strategies for expanding the company's customer base in conjunction and collaboration with sales and marketing. Works to maintain disciplined, productive, and profitable relationships with agents. Delivers a consistent message to agents related to the value of doing business with the company. Oversee Operational Monitoring: Monitors and analyzes KPIs and reporting metrics to ensure performance meets company quality and service standards. Takes action accordingly. Collects, prepares and presents all relevant data regarding Field Underwriting production and performance. Analyzes information and identifies relevant trends. Analyzes, reports on and prudently reacts to market conditions, program results, risk exposure, etc. Maintains knowledge of competitive carriers' best practices and market intelligence. Analyzes actuarial data to determine specific guidelines to improve loss ratios while working with sales to grow the top line. Oversees the evaluation of individual accounts for acceptability and execution of underwriting policy by following practices and procedures outlined by staff underwriting. Specific tasks for line underwriting include selecting insureds, classifying and pricing accounts, recommending coverage, managing the book of business, and coordinating marketing efforts. Reviews and maintains in depth knowledge of underwriting guidelines, forms and rate manuals, and works with outside service providers such as ISO and URB. Continually reviews underwriting guidelines and rate levels in response to corporate results performance metrics, emerging market trends and competitive needs. Oversees and assumes responsibility of regulatory compliance, including staying abreast of applicable rules and regulations and filing state regulatory reports within required deadlines. Develops, monitors and maintains commercial budget.Monitors/manages expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budgetary and operational constraints. Leadership & Development Oversees the hiring and development of the appropriate field operations employees. Develops leaders and staff who can drive innovation and growth. Leads through other managers. Develops workforce plans, monitors and recommends staffing levels. Recruits and selects qualified staff and provides effective management of all direct reports. Promotes staff morale and motivation, and provides one-on-one meetings to review performance and address issues. Utilizes coaching, engagement and retention strategies with a clear focus on interactive approaches and collaboration. Performs other related work as assigned. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Finance or related field, or equivalent combination of training and/or experience. Masters of Business Administration a plus. CPCU preferred. 10 years of progressively responsible experience in a P&C commercial lines underwriting company. Experience in Church and/or Non-Profit and Education markets preferred. 7 years prior management experience. Experience working in modern underwriting technology platforms and lean operations. Additional Skills & Abilities: Well developed and deep knowledge in current commercial lines underwriting practices, operations and strategy. Broad scope of expertise in emerging commercial lines underwriting concepts and procedures and knowledge of best practices of other carriers. Keen ability to think and act strategically; planning for the long term while balancing the short and long range needs of the organization. Proven ability to embrace and excels in a culture where a wide degree of accountability, business innovation, collaboration and creativity is expected. Strong relationship building capabilities, project management skills, and ability to successfully lead a diverse team. Skilled in leading through other managers. Strong thought leader, exceptional customer service and strategic orientation. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization. Proven ability to formulate, manage and meet budget and operational goals, including workforce planning skills and development and management of key performance metrics. Strong technology and systems aptitude as it relates to underwriting practices and procedures. Proficient skills in using Microsoft Office.
