Summary
Provides preoperative and postoperative patient care in the
outpatient surgery setting according to established standards of
care. Serves the populations ranging from infant, pediatric,
adolescent, adult and geriatric.This position is full time. No
NIGHTS. No WEEKENDS. No CALL.
Essential Functions
Prepare and evaluate outpatients preoperatively in an efficient and
caring manner to provide for a smooth patient flow throughout their
experience. Collects, assesses, and analyzes patient data using
nursing diagnoses to develop plan of care.
Responsible for obtaining appropriate lab specimens, performing and
interpreting EKGs, and IV access according to perioperative
requirements.
Maintains knowledge of equipment and stays abreast of current
perioperative nursing trends.
Review outpatient charts immediately preoperatively to ensure
completeness, including completion of all preoperative
consents.
Communicate effectively and appropriately with staff, physicians,
patients, families and other health care team members.
Conduct pre-surgical assessment.
Provides a safe environment for patient and staff by implementing
standards of aseptic technique and by controlling the physical and
psychological aspects of that environment.
Provides airway management.
Ongoing physiological assessment through all phases of the surgical
experience, including medication and pain management.
Participates in the performance improvement process. Assists with
regulatory compliance throughout the organization.
Demonstrates competence in specified computer applications.
Adheres to all Joint Commission Ambulatory Standards and CMS Rules
and Regulations.
Other duties as assigned by respective Nurse Manager, including
staff cross training.
Participate in maintenance of unit resource materials.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
R.N. with license to practice in State of Iowa.
Mandatory reporting course within previous 5 years.
IV skills.
Knowledge of perioperative services and patient education.
Maintains BLS certification.
Maintains ACLS certification, or obtains within 6 months of
hire.
ARD RN - PALS certification strongly encouraged but not
required.
