Job TypePart-timeDescriptionIowa Orthopedic Center is seeking a
Rounding Nurse to join our team.The rounding nurse provides
physical and educational support for the physician while rounding
on postoperative and non-operative orthopedic patients that are
inpatient. The rounding nurse assists with giving verbal report for
each patient, including a condensed medical history reporting any
critical or important information that would be beneficial for the
physician, reason for hospitalization, any complications, updates
or changes since patient was seen last.**This position works
nights, weekends and holidays. Collecting patient information in
advance, reading and compiling information into a written document
to provide the physicians is imperative.**Shift-Friday night,
Saturday morning and evening, Sunday morning (12-15hrs total)Key
Responsibilities
- Must be able to regularly attend work and use the designated
time keeping system to track hours.
- Demonstrates flexibility in meeting times and locations with
ever changing physician schedules
- Communicates effectively with physician and PA's with location
for meeting for Rounds
- Communicates appropriately with patients and families (if
applicable)
- Communicates appropriately and in a timely manner with
supervisors and managers of IOC.
- Functions with autonomy in hospital base nursing practice
within the guideline established by the Board of Nursing and Iowa
Ortho.
- Recognizes potentially dangerous symptoms outside of orthopedic
care that would require immediate notification to the
physician.
- At the direction of the physician, provides patient education,
helps to answer any questions the patient may have, and documents
actions in the electronic medical record.
- Works collaboratively with physicians and other members of the
healthcare team to process information in an accurate, timely and
consistent manner.
- Exercise good judgement in the identification of potential
problems such as medication side effects, adverse interactions,
postop complications, or non compliance with medical plan of
care.
- Responsible for handling a high volume of postoperative
inpatient patient's requiring good judgement and decision making
skills
- Documents all health related and patient information pertaining
to the most current post operative rounds into the medical record
accurately and concisely.
- Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to the patient's privacy
upon examination by physician by making sure the door is closed,
all non examined body parts are covered, only appropriate or
approved persons are in room during exam, etc.
- Acts in a professional manner, reflecting the mission of Iowa
Ortho and compliant with policies, procedures, regulatory agencies
and professional requirements.
- Acts as patient advocate
- Assists the physician with removal of any dressings, examining
the wound for postop complications, redressing/cleaning surgical
wound per physician direction.
- Ensures that each patient chart is filled out to completion in
order to be discharged or signed off by our physician when
necessary. Including any physical documentation that needs
completed prior to discharge ie: narcotic prescriptions, Skilled
nursing facility orders, Physical therapy orders
- Must be able to acclimate to unexpected changes or
complications delaying rounding such as computer issues, paper
charting, late physicians due to emergencies, etc.Requirements
- Maintains current Iowa R.N. licensure
- Orthopedic background a plus but not required
- Current BLS certification
- Current mandatory reporter certification
- Demonstrates clear and effective communication skills using the
English language.
- Demonstrates basic computer skills and accurate data entry;
ability to develop skills on the ACIS system by documentation which
provides superior patient care and performs as an effective team
member.
- Ability to apply nursing and administrative judgement to carry
out instructions furnished in oral, written and diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete
variables in standardized situations
- Able to act as a first responder in cases of patient distress;
knowledge of AED use and emergency protocol for Mercy
Hospital.
- Consistently demonstrates a positive attitude, outlook and
demeanor to all staff and patients.
- Eligible and able to serve as a mentor to new employees by
providing accurate training, shadowing and feedback to staff in
order to assist supervisor in orientation and pilot programs.
- Ability to sit, talk and hear in order to communicate properly
with patients, providers, and other professionals using the English
language.
- Ability to use hands to fingers for keying and computer
use.
- Ability to handle, feel and reach with hands and arms to
examine or assist with patient care.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close
