Position Summary
The Quality Control Supervisor/Manager is responsible for the
quality of incoming ingredients, outgoing products, and maintenance
of necessary records. The QC Supervisor primary function is to
assure the production of quality feeds from quality ingredients in
a manner that will be accordance with procedures established by the
Director of Quality Assurance and state and federal
regulations.
In the absence of the QC Supervisor/Manager, the person responsible
for filling in will be designated by plant management. A designated
alternate(s) for this position may vary based on individual
training at each plant.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Facilitate the plant HACCP Feed & Food Safety Team.
Conduct employee reviews with direct reports as applicable.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Administrative
- Report any factors that may influence the quality and safety of
the finished feed and ingredients to the immediate
supervisor
- Daily review of all production records for any
discrepancies
- Verify the Ingredient Transporter Verification SOP and form are
followed and completed accurately
- Verify the Bulk Feed and Bulk Ingredient Transporter
Verification Form has been completed
- Assure feed label and formula are in agreement and current, and
upload new and revised formulas
- Update tags when the Nutrition department has issued a
revision
- Print tags or assist operators in printing tags, maintain tag
stock, ink and masters inventory
- Assist in the enforcement of safety and housekeeping policies
in the plant; document housekeeping activities
- Participate on the QC committee by conducting QC meetings on a
monthly basis; document QC meeting notes and file on the shared
drive
- Review and assist with training on new and revised standard
operating procedures applicable to the quality and safety of the
finished feed and ingredients
- Become familiar with various medications, the cautions that
should be taken in handling them, and their various levels of
usage
- Investigate customer complaints and State stop sales; report
findings to corporate QA
- Verify traceability within the plant; conduct a mock recall on
a feed and ingredient on an annual basis
- Assist with internal plant audits and third party
audits
- Assist with the training of new plant personnel regarding food
safety and quality programming
- Other duties as assigned by plant management
- Facility Monitoring
- Ensure feeder tests and densities are up to date (site
dependent)
- Ensure that proper clean out of pellet dies, bagging bins, etc.
is performed prior to a production run
- Physically check holding tanks or bins for leaks, hang ups or
other factors that may affect the quality of the feed on a routine
basis; document bin cleanout for traceability purposes
- Routinely check equipment in use in the QC lab to verify
accuracy; conduct routine calibrations
- Check the coding devices to see that they are in proper working
condition and that the correct code number is applied to the bag or
if in bulk, on the tag.
- Work with production in determining factors, and in making
recommendations on equipment or facilities that will assure the
quality and safety of the finished feeds and ingredients
- Conduct warehouse checks and verify product rotation
- Ingredient Receiving and Product Release
- Place feed in positive release programs on hold until approval
to release has been granted; release product for shipment as
required and investigate lots that failed to be released
- Place on-hold or reject finished products that do not meet
standards; place a quality control hold placard on the finished
product until disposition has occurred; maintain the quality
control hold placard in a file
- Ensure all policies in regard to the quality of incoming
ingredients and finished feeds are met
- Inspect finished feed at various intervals during a run and
record your findings
- Compliance
- Maintain a daily accurate inventory of all medications and
supervise their additions to the feed per SOP guidelines, ensure
medications being used are not expired
- Notify Corporate QA if changes to the process flow occur in
order to make the necessary changes to the HACCP Feed & Food Safety
Plan
- Conduct follow up investigation on any feed that does not meet
specifications and document all findings on the corrective action
report form, and electronically file the corrective action in the
plant folder on the shared drive
- Submit the required feed samples containing a Category II Type
A drug to the appropriate laboratory
- Verify incoming swine vitamin premixes have been approved for
release prior to use
- Periodically verify purchased products meet the stated label
weight upon arrival
- Verify bag weights of KNG products meet the label
weight
- Sampling and Testing
- Follow the mycotoxin testing schedule for the testing of
incoming ingredients prior to unloading
- Train plant personnel to test incoming ingredients prior to
receipt, and oversee that required testing is conducted correctly
and accurately
- If any ingredient is rejected or is subject to rejection,
immediately call it to the attention of the Plant Manager and
Commodities department at Corporate
- Verify ingredients received match the order and bill of
lading
- Inspect all incoming ingredients, including micro-ingredients
and fill out ingredient inspection reports
- Collect incoming ingredients and finished feed samples,
properly identify and retain samples in compliance with KNG
guidelines
- Submit samples for analysis according to LIMS, or the
Ingredient Laboratory Assay Schedule (SOP 34-8.2.4-09-005), and
Finished Feed Laboratory Assay Schedule (SOP
34-8.2.4-09-006)
- Send additional samples of ingredients or finished feeds for
chemical or biological analysis when deemed necessary by the
Analytical Services Manager and/or the Plant Manager
- Review analytical data to monitor results for trends
- Maintain the environmental monitoring program for pet food
(site specific)
- Conduct annual flushing study
- Follow the quality control checklist for all other routine
tests such as:
- Moistures
- Shakeouts
- Durabilities
- Mixer studies
- Mycotoxins
- Record Maintenance
- Maintain all specified production records in an organized
manner for the time period as stated by the control of records
SOP
- Maintain the following records if applicable; Category II Type
A, testing log, glass register, finished feed assay book, pest
management, sanitation, salmonella hold and release records,
cripple bag report, shakeouts, durabilities, moisture log,
etc.
- Note and record any ingredient substitutions that are made and
properly file authorized substitutions from Nutrition
- Ensure forms are completed accurately and in their entirety to
include signature and date if applicable
- Assist with inputting data for the Pennent program
Education
Associate's Degree or a minimum of 2-3 years related experience
Experience & Qualifications
- Knowledge of OSHA safety requirements
- Computer skills, including the use of spreadsheets and LIMS
database
- Thorough understanding of cGMP's
- Knowledge of HACCP Feed & Food Safety Plan and preventative
controls within the hazard analysis
- Knowledge of FSMA
- A thorough understanding of company product specifications,
ingredient specifications and laboratory procedures
